Future Quest

Future Quest seeks to answer the question: can we use the new tech wave of the internet to accelerate solving the climate crisis?

Future Quest is a project started between Future Works, our Future Horizon community with our key partner Product Shop. First internally announced in April, then publicly announced in August 2022 it began its growth capturing a mixture of approaches. Future Horizon resides at a convergence of future trends: web3 adoption, private climate investing, public adoption of man-made climate change theory, large funds committing to ESG, lower end of the broader cryptocurrency cycle, climate anxiety increase.

The project was started by our co-founder Matt an the Future Works team lead all the creative for the project.

First comes the Dragon

We came up with a multi-step strategy to announce the project. Firstly, we want to go far from climate action and attract gamers, NFT collectors and “degens” of web3 space to help the project validate its theories on target demographics (the core climate proto-community already exists within Future Horizon).

The story would begin with “The Mighty Dragon of Regen”.

The story started on Twitter and quickly captured some engagement, with over 2000 interactions (Retweet, Comment, Like) on the first day. The story has been prepared to continue for several weeks and progressively reveal more about the project and the mythical “Vanguards”.

Eventually, we revealed the Dragon and over time, other “Vanguards”. More on this below.

Visual Language

We designed a brand and visual language that’s both rooted in the community’s past (Future Horizon icon), and steps into a new space - with a timeless look, moving away from common elements in regenerative branding: there are no pictures of trees, plants or children in the global south. The brand is vibrant and ready to welcome anyone who cares about their future - whether they care about climate itself or not.

  • Future Quest

With the proposed Future Quest brand treatment we aim to inspire hope and positive outlook for increasing amount of those affected by climate anxiety. We named the visual language “Tribal Futuristic Solarpunk”. This drives especially the look of the 3D world and characters which are part of the narrative and NFTs.

Vibrant Web Presence

The website is simple yet rich in animation, micro-interactions and has some advanced tech under the hood. We want the website to herald the coming Future Quest platform and embody the visual language, without being overwhelming.

We also created custom 3D avatars for the team, using a 3rd party generator + some editing.

Harnessing AI to illustrate “quests”

We developed a method to use Midjourney AI to create illustrations for quests. All images were generated automatically, in one go, based on just a query including the title of the project.

Vanguard NFTs

We worked with our partners at KoffeeCup to create a set of 3D characters in line with the Story and Visual Language.

Results

Future Quest Season 1 made significant strides in climate impact through its funding of 17 organizations and accelerating numerous others. By selling NFTs, we generated $1 million in revenue, allocating $580,000 to direct grants and organizing impact gatherings at major events like NY Climate Week and COP27.

Their contributions led to substantial environmental achievements: securing 60,000 hectares of terrestrial carbon on a Pacific island, planting over 100,000 mangroves, generating 69,300 kWh of green electricity, and protecting 2,500 acres of land. Additionally, they fostered multiple infrastructure advancements and notably impacted 10 out of 18 projects in the Global South.

“Future Quest proves not just a dream come true - a truly modern way to drive an answer to the climate crisis - but also is an incredible test ground for strategies and technologies we’ve been developing at Future Works”

— Matt Cyrankiewicz, Co-creator of Future Quest
